Tim Shepherd has always been fanatical about the natural world and knew from an early age that he wanted a biologically based career. A degree in botany and loads of enthusiasm got him started with Oxford Scientific Films back in 1984. This was a great opportunity to work on every aspect of wildlife filmmaking and gain experience with all sorts of cameras and techniques. He went freelance in 1990 and since then has specialised in time-lapse and macro-photography. He won Emmy and RTS awards for cinematography on The Private Life of Plants and The Human Body series. He has contributed to most of the BBC Natural History Unit major series since and filmed and directed several whole programmes for The Natural World series. He was senior cameraman on the plants programme of the BBC series Life and he has filmed a lot of time-lapse footage for the forthcoming BBC series Frozen Planet. He is now filming for the BBC series Africa and is creating 3D time-lapses for SKY.
For the last few years Tim has also been developing his artwork, much of it inspired by the knowledge he has gained through his filming.
