John Waters has worked in television as a freelance director/cameraman for more than 20 years. His first film Secret Lake (made with an old Bolex camera) was shown on Channel 4 in 1987. Since then he has filmed in more than twenty countries and has credits on more than sixty programmes. He has worked on many of the David Attenborough series for the BBC including The Private Life of Plants, The Life of Birds and Planet Earth and also programmes in the BBC strands Wildlife on One and The Natural World. Recently he filmed on Series 3 and 4 of Meerkat Manor and, in 2008, was nominated for an Emmy for ‘Outstanding Cinematography’ for Series 3. He also worked on the feature film based on the show’s best-loved characters, Meerkat Manor: The Story Begins.

Over the past year John has worked on projects in Bangladesh, Qatar, France, South Africa and Ireland, and is a regular cameraman on Monkey Life (Series 5) about Monkey World, the ape and primate rescue centre in Dorset.  He is presently making a film for BBC Autumnwatch.

John’s filming career has taken him from the arctic to the tropical rainforest and almost every environment in between – but he is always glad to get back to Somerset where he has lived for the past 15 years.
